just so much to say. the politics of “apology”—who is forced to, who is asked to, how it is used, how it is wielded against, the power to force, the lack of power to even ask. what it means when somebody does apologize— everybody and their mother wants an apology, only some of us are forced to give it.
can social justice type people really “reclaim” a demand for apology? can they demand an apology in a way that doesn’t mimic the woman on her knees, the slap in the face? what is a demand for apology in this culture except an attempt to control, to exert power over? and do we write “how to negotiate being called a racist” as a way to give wriggle room to those who are not used to being powerless/controlled? why do we never write posts about how to handle being called a wetback bitch?
